Magnesium is one of the metals with poor corrosion resistance,the surface of magnesium ingots is easily corroded when exposed to the atmosphere, in addition, some impurities such as inorganic chloride salt fluxes and electrolytes that adhere to the surface of magnesium ingots will strongly corrode magnesium. Therefore, the magnesium ingots produced by refining must undergo appropriate surface protection treatment to reduce the corrosion loss of magnesium ingots during storage.

The surface treatment methods of magnesium ingots vary with the length of storage time and user requirements. The most commonly used method is pickling to remove impurities attached to the surface of magnesium ingots and to increase the anti-oxidation film layer. From the perspective of environmental protection, refined magnesium pickling used sulfuric acid is better because nitric acid will produce gaseous nitrogen oxides and pollute the atmosphere. The pickled magnesium ingots require a smooth surface, smooth and shiny surface, no black oxidation spots, and no obvious shrinkage holes.

The pickling process is as follows:

1.Pickling preparation:

(1)Tool preparation:crane, stainless steel cage, pickling tank,sulfuric acid;

(2)Safety preparation:rubber gloves,safety distance.

2.Prepare acid

Clean the pickling tank with clean water several times to ensure that there is no garbage, debris, and dust in the tank;fill the clear pool to three quarters;pour water into the pickling tank, and prepare the pickling liquid according to the corresponding ratio standard to three-quarters of the pickling tank;

3.Put magnesium ingot

Put the stainless steel cage on the cart;install magnesium ingots into the stainless cage;push the cart under the crane;start the crane, hoist the stainless steel cage, and slowly move it to the pickling tank;

4.Pickling

(1)Gently dip the magnesium ingot into the pickling bath;

(2)Ensure that the magnesium ingot is immersed in the middle of the pickling tank, does not rise or sink to the bottom;

(3)Soak the magnesium ingot in the pickling tank for 50-60 seconds;

(4)Start the crane, slowly hoist the magnesium ingot, and slowly move it to the first cleaning tank.

5.Cleaning (First Time)

(1)Slowly sink the  magnesium ingot into the middle of the cleaning pool water.

(2)Start the crane to make the magnesium ingot move up and down five times in the cleaning tank, each time the magnesium ingot will not rise or sink.

(3)Start the crane, move the magnesium ingot up, and slowly move it to the second cleaning tank.

6.Cleaning (Second Time)

Repeat the cleaning procedure for the first time cleaning, and then put the cleaned magnesium ingot in front of the workbench.

7.Drying

Some pickling plants use equipment drying, and some others use natural drying;place the magnesium ingot on the pallet and then prepare for packaging.

Precautions for magnesium ingot pickling process:

(1)Operators or employees must keep a distance of more than 1 meter from the pickling tank to prevent sulfuric acid from splashing and hurting people.

(2)Magnesium ingots must be immersed in acid or water in the pool and must not be exposed to the liquid surface.

(3)Hot magnesium ingots can not enter the pickling tank.

(4)The washed magnesium ingots must be placed in a ventilated and dry area, and placed in a ventilated and dry area, and can be packaged after two hours.

Magnesium ingots used in the near future can be directly sent to users in plastic packaging after they are generally brushed and slag moved. Magnesium ingots that are generally used for several months are pickled and packaged using the above-mentioned sulfuric acid pickling method.
