high/medium/low ferromanganese

Ferromanganese is an ferro alloy composed of manganese and iron, which also contains small amounts of other elements such as carbon, silicon, and phosphorus. The grades of ferromanganese are divided according to the carbon content of the alloy, according to the different carbon content, it is divided into high carbon, medium carbon and low carbon ferromanganese. The common specification of high carbon ferromanganese is Mn: 65%/75%min, C: 8.0%max, common specification of medium carbon ferromanganese: 75%min/78%min, C:2.0%max/1.5%max, common specification of low carbon ferromanganese: 80%min, C:0.4%max/ 0.7%max.

(1) As deoxidizer and desulfurizer. Manganese has a relatively large affinity with oxygen and sulfur, so manganese is a deoxidizer and desulfurizer for molten steel. In the process of steelmaking, part of the iron is oxidized, and the FeO formed is partially dissolved in the molten steel, which reduces the performance of the steel, so deoxidation must be carried out in the later stage of steelmaking. Since the affinity of manganese to oxygen is greater than that of iron and oxygen, manganese can capture oxygen in ferrous oxide to form MnO which is insoluble in molten steel. Almost all steel grades must be deoxidized with ferromanganese. In the steelmaking process, manganese can reduce FeS to form stable MnS, and MnS is insoluble in molten steel, so manganese is also a desulfurizing agent.
(2) As alloying agent. Manganese is added as an alloying element to the molten steel to alloy the steel, thereby improving the mechanical properties of the steel and increasing the strength, hardness, ductility, toughness and wear resistance of the steel. Therefore, manganese is an indispensable alloying element for steel products, and almost all steels contain a certain amount of manganese.
There are two production methods of high carbon ferromanganese: blast furnace method and electric furnace method. The production of high carbon ferromanganese was first used in blast furnace production, which has high output and low cost, and is still widely used at home and abroad. There are three methods for smelting high-carbon ferromanganese by electric furnace method, one is solvent-free method, the other is solvent method, and the third is low-solvent method. Domestic smelting of high-carbon ferromanganese mostly adopts solvent-free method and low-solvent method.
There are three methods for smelting medium and low carbon ferromanganese, point silicon thermal method, shaking bag method and oxygen blowing method, all methods adopt intermittent operation. So far, the electro-silicon thermal method is still widely used at home and abroad. Medium and low carbon ferromanganese is one of the important raw materials for stainless steel, high manganese heat-resistant steel, alloy steel, structural steel, tool steel and electric welding rod. Production of special steel grades containing manganese and military steel.
