Silicon metal 98 generally refers to metal silicon with a silicon purity of 98% and above. Like other types of silicon metal, it is smelted from silica and coke through deoxidation and reduction. But it is an industrial silicon metal product that does not reach the regular standard. General silicon metal refers to metal silicon with a purity of 98.5% and above. For example, silicon metal 553, its purity can reach 98.5%, so it is also called silicon metal 98.5.

The various physical and chemical properties of 98 grade silicon metal are slightly inferior to other high-purity si metal models. But in fact, a considerable part of silicon metal models were used in the metallurgy industry, used such as deoxidizer in steel-making or iron casting, or as an alloying agent in other alloys. Aluminum alloys were the biggest field of application of metallurgical grade silicon metals. Silicon metal 98 can be added to those places, and it acts perfectly. In most of the aluminum alloy, the silicon requirement was around 10%. And when the final product was non-precious parts, people always use low purity silicon models, like Si 553 or Si 441. In which the silicon content reaches up to 98.5% and 99%. In other words, the impurities of silicon metal 98 are 2%, comparing to 1.5% and 1%. Yes, the impurity of Si metal 98 increased, it is 30% and 50% more of Si metal 553 and 441. But we also must notice that the total dose to the alloy was one-tenth only. That is to say, the impurity added into the final product of those models will be 0.2%, 0.15%, and 0.1%. No t mention that the impurities of silicon metal 98, just like other models, were consist of Fe, Al, and Ca. The Al will join the Al-alloy and have no bad effect. The Fe will join the ferrous as well, sometimes it plays a very good roll. Only the calcium in Si metal 98 will do effect, but by reducing iron and aluminum from the total impurities, very little Ca will be left in Si metal 98.

On the other hand, when the Si metal 98 was used in steelmaking as a deoxidation agent, the Fe will melt immediately and the Ca, Al will even help to deoxidization process and are helpful in the slag-forming process. So it makes no difference . And the Si metal 98 itself, will be the perfect agent. In all, Si metal 98 can be a good replacement for silicon metal 553 & 441. And its price is irresistible to those who want to save production costs.
