Nitrided ferro chrome can also be called nitrogen ferro chrome which adopt the production technology of solid state nitriding with vacuum resistance furnace, it is mainly composed of CrN,Cr2N,Fe4N and other nitrides, it is also possible to produce composite nitrides of ferro chrome.

The nitriding can separate chromium and iron into separate phases, the iron nitride has excellent magnetic properties which make it widely used in the magnetic equipment, the addition of iron nitride improves the surface hardness and wear resistance of magnetic equipment, in addition, chromium nitride CrN with cubic lithology structure become a widely used materials because of high hardness, oxidation resistance, corrosion resistance and wear resistance.

At present,there are two main ways to produce nitrided ferro chrome liquid nitriding and solid nitriding,although through the liquid nitriding way can make the nitrided ferro chrome more dense, but because the temperature is too high to decrease the nitrogen content, so make the content of nitrogen only 2% or 3%, so the liquid nitriding is rarely used in production at present. 

As a new type of nitriding material, nitrided ferro chrome is often used as an alloy additive and is widely used in smelting production of nitrogen-containing stainless steel, heat-resistant steel, alloy steel and other special steels.

According to research, nitrogen has the property of promoting austenite formation. The effect of nitrogen in expanding the austenite region is about 30 times that of nickel. Adding nitrogen to chromium-manganese and chromium-manganese-nickel stainless steel can replace the lack of nickel to reduce the production cost.
