Low carbon ferro chrome is a ferro alloy composed of iron and silicon. Low carbon ferro chrome is made from coke, steel scrap, quartz(or silica) and smelted in an electric furnace. Because silicon and oxygen are easily synthesized into silica, low carbon ferro chrome is often used as a deoxidier in steel making; meanwhile a large amount of heat is released during the formation of SiO2, and it is also advantageous to increase the temperature of the molten steel while deoxidizing. In addition, low carbon ferro chrome can also be used as an alloying element additive, and widely used in low-alloy structural steel, spring steel, bearing steel, heat-resistant steel and electrical silicon steel. Low carbon ferro chrome is commonly used in iron alloy production and chemical industry as a reducing agent.
1.Low carbon ferro chrome is used as a deoxidizer and alloying agent in the steel making industry. In order to obtain qualified steel and ensure the quality of steel, deoxidation must be carried out in the final stage of steel making. The chemical affinity between silicon and oxygen is very high. Therefore, low carbon ferro chrome is a strong deoxidizer for steel making used in diffusion and deoxygenation. Adding a certain amount of silicon to the steel can significantly improve the strength, hardness and elasticity of the steel, so smelting structural steel(Si:0.40-1.75% ), tool steel(Si: 0.30-1.8%), spring steel(Si: 0.40-2.8%) and silicon steel for transformers(Si:2.81-4.8%), low-carbon ferro chrome is also used as an alloying agent. What’s more important, low carbon ferro chrome can improve the shape of inclusions and reduce the content of gas elements in molten steel. It is an effective new technology for improving steel quality, reducing costs and saving iron. It is especially suitable for deoxidation requirements of continuous casting steel. It has been proved that low carbon ferro chrome not only meets the deoxidation requirements of steel making, but also has desulfurization performance , large specific gravity and strong penetrating power.
2.Low-carbon ferro chrome is used as an inoculant and nodularizer in the cast iron industry. A certain amount of low carbon ferro chrome can prevent the formation of carbides in iron and promote the precipitation and spheroidization of graphite for casting. Therefore, low-carbon ferro chrome is an important inoculant (help to precipitate graphite) and spheroidizing agent in the production of ductile iron.
3.Low carbon ferro chrome is used as a reducing agent in the production of ferro alloys. So high silicon low carbon ferrochrome is a commonly used as reducing agent in the production of low carbon iron alloys in the iron alloy industry.
4.Applications in other areas. The fine or atomized low carbon ferro chrome powder can be used as a suspension phase in the beneficiation industry. It can be used as a coating for welding rods in the electrode manufacturing industry.
