ferroalloy for steelmaking

Ferroalloy is an alloy in which one or two or more metal or non-metal elements are fused together. It is not a metal material used directly, but is mainly used as an intermediate material for deoxidizers and alloying agents in steel production.

1.Ferroalloy used as deoxidizer for steelmaking

Oxidation is used to remove carbon, phosphorus, sulfur and other impurities in molten iron during steelmaking. After these oxidation tasks are completed, oxygen is also absorbed in the molten steel. If these oxygen always exist in the steel, the performance of the steel will be greatly reduced. . The elements or alloys used for deoxidation are called deoxidizers. The iron alloys commonly used as deoxidizers are as follows:

(1)Silico-manganese alloy: When silico-manganese alloy is used for deoxidation, the deoxidation product formed has a low melting point and is easy to float, so it is an ideal composite deoxidizer.

(2)Ferrosilicon: Ferrosilicon is one of the earliest and most important products in the ferroalloy industry. In steelmaking production, except for some boiling steels, almost all steel grades use ferrosilicon's strongest deoxidizer for precipitation deoxidation and diffusion deoxidation. Common grades are 65#, 72#, 75#, and commonly used particle sizes natural blocks, standard blocks 10-50mm.

(3)Silicon-calcium alloy: Silicon and calcium have a great affinity for oxygen, and calcium has a great affinity for sulfur, and deoxidation and desulfurization products are easy to float and remove, improve the performance of steel, and increase the plasticity and impact toughness of steel. Therefore, it is an ideal composite deoxidizer with deoxidation and desulfurization ability in steelmaking. It can also replace aluminum for final deoxidation and is widely used in the production of high-quality steel. Common types of calcium silicate are CaSi030 and CaSi5528, and standard blocks with a particle size of 10-60mm are available.

(4)Ferromanganese: According to different carbon content, it can be divided into high-carbon ferromanganese, medium-carbon ferromanganese, and low-carbon ferromanganese as a deoxidizing and desulfurizing agent in steelmaking. It is widely used in low-carbon manganese-containing special steel and military industry.

In addition, there are some other commonly used composite deoxidizers, such as silicon-aluminum-barium, silicon-barium-calcium, silicon-barium-iron alloy, etc., which are also used in steelmaking.

2.Ferroalloy used for steelmaking alloying agent

(1)Ferrochrome: An important alloying element in steel, it can improve the mechanical properties of steel and make steel have special physical and chemical properties.

(2)Ferrosilicon: Adding a certain amount of silicon to steel can significantly improve the strength, hardness and elasticity of steel. Therefore, when smelting structural steel, tool steel, spring steel and other steel types, a certain amount of ferrosilicon must be added as an alloying agent.

(3)Ferromanganese and silico-manganese alloys. Manganese is added as an alloying element to the molten steel to alloy the steel, thereby improving the mechanical properties of the steel and increasing the strength, hardness, ductility, toughness and wear resistance of the steel.

In addition, there are some ferroalloys that are added as certain specific elements in steelmaking. For example, ferrophosphorus is used as an additive of phosphorus in steelmaking, although phosphorus is a harmful impurity in most steels, it is applied to certain steel grades and improve the corrosion resistance of steel.

The raw materials used for steelmaking are diverse and have different functions, such as deoxidation, alloying, slag removal, carburization, etc. Anyang Huatuo Metallurgy has been engaged in steelmaking raw materials for more than 20 years.
